Caring for your new silkies
Caring for Silkie Chickens
Housing & Environment
Silkies must be kept dry and protected from drafts. Their feathers do not repel water, making moisture control critical. Provide clean bedding and low roosts (6–12 inches) as most prefer not to roost, but lay together in a "cuddle puddle".
Feathering & Grooming
Silkies have silk-like feathers and feathered legs. Check feet regularly and trim feathers around the eyes if visibility becomes an issue.
Nutrition
Feed a quality age-appropriate poultry feed and provide grit when offering treats or forage. Fresh water should always be available. We prefer and recommend Kalmbach feed.
Broodiness & Egg Production
Silkies are naturally broody and make excellent mothers. Egg production is lower than commercial breeds.
Temperament & Flock Compatibility
Silkies are gentle and may be bullied by aggressive birds. They do best with calm flock mates. We keep our silkies separate from other breeds.
Health & Maintenance
Monitor for mites, lice, and scaly leg mites. Keep feathered feet clean and dry.
Final Thoughts
With proper care, Silkies are long-lived, gentle birds suitable for families, breeders, and exhibitors alike. If you have questions about caring for your Silkies, feel free to reach out — we are happy to help.
